Chiesa di San Gaudenzio

The Church of St. Gaudenzio (Fraz. Crusinallo, Omegna)

In accordance with the tradition, the Parish Church of Crusinallo was built on the top of the hill where St. Julius himself put up a cross; This could also be the origin of the resort’s name (Crux in altum), even though the historians have refuted this hypothesis. The place has been a separated Commune till 1928.

The Romanesque church, which is also “oriented”, as many others in Cusio area, lies peacefully exactly on a rise. The original structure dates back to the X – XIth century, as testified by the lower part of the bell tower, then made higher during the XVIth century. The irregular saddle roof façade, though keeping the charm of the Romanesque art - for example in the pensile small arches – shows the signs of the enlargement of the Church: besides the sole original nave, a second one has been added, and near the portal – that make us guess the old size of the building – has been added a pronao.

Inside, restoration works of 1972 has brought to light the Romanesque columns. The polyptych by Filippo Cavallazzi, which dates back to 1567, is really valuable: it shows some worshipped Saints of the area, with St. Gaudenzio in the middle and other sacred figures, such as God the Father, the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus and some angels. The woody baptistery dates back to 1612.

Every year, on January 22nd, St. Gaudenzio’s Day is an important event for the inhabitants of this village which is renowned for being the cradle of important household items’ industries in Cusio area, but which also saves to heedful visitors the charm of the ancient suburbs.
