Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta
The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Orta San Giulio)
From Motta’s slope (that`s to say towards the rise, towards the Sacred Mount), just near the lakeside, you can get to the Parish Church of Orta, consecrated to Our Lady of the Assumption. The slope is a magnificent cobbled paved road flanked with historical palaces on both sides, and it leads right to the Sacred Mount of Orta, just beyond the Church.
The façade is the result of an harmonious XVIIIth century reconstruction by Carlo Nigra, and it is preceded by a charming XVIIth century protiro, while the portal is made of Oira serpentine, the renowned greenish stone mined from the homonymous village’s quarries on the west shore, which dates back to 1485, at the beginning of the construction process.
Inside there are two aisles and a nave, divided by granite pillars; in one of the chapels, one of the main pictorial examples of the early XVIIth century is kept: a work of art by Giulio Cesare Procaccini which portrays San Carlo Borromeo walking in procession in Milan, during the dark times of the plague. We also mention other paintings of the XVIIth and XVIIIth century by Rossetti, Orgiazzi, Cantalupi. Indeed, the church was erected just in the Virgin Mary’s honour, thanksgiving for the eradication of the plague. The consecration to Our Lady of the Assumption dates back to the XVIIIth century, while the Church has been a Parish one since the XVIth century.
The Parish Church of Orta is like a jewel mounted in the village, whose charm is improved by its splendour: both in the itinerary that leads upwards to the Church, with its precious façade – an harmonious match between straight and curved lines woven together in a coloured palette that revives the whole - and near the protiro when, once your turn back, you will find a charming view over Orta and its Lake.
