Santa Maria di Luzzara - Madonna di Luzzara
The old Oratory – which, according to the experts, dates back to the XIth century, at least in the apsidal section – lies outside Gozzano city centre, just two kilometres far along the road toward San Maurizio d’Opaglio. The three oriented apses are really typical, but unusual in such a small structure.
The saddle roof façade props up a small bell gable. The interior is composed of just one nave, a sole room with two cross arcades and hedged by three small apses at the end, the main one and the two side ones.
Both inside and outside, the church is adorned with a lot of XVth and XVIth century frescos, recently restored. The Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus and the Annunciation stand above the entrance and they represent the consecration of the Church to Our Lady. Moreover, on the façade you can find St. Julian, the patron saint of Gozzano, who was buried there.
The small church of Madonna di Luzzara is plunged in the green near Lake Orta shores, just in front of the hill dominated by Buccione’s Tower: it is really a charming place and it deserves a visit.
