Giardino Alpinia
Alpinia’s Garden (Alpino di Stresa)On the slopes of Mount
Mottarone, facing down Lake Maggiore – though part of Vergante and today member
of the Ecomuseo Cusius project – lies one of the Italian alpine botanical
gardens. It is situated at a height of over 800 meters above sea level, and it
was set up in 1934 in this Stresa’s hamlet, Alpino, just near Gignese. You can
reach it whether by a cableway connecting Stresa to Mount Mottarone, or by car,
driving along the route that leads to Mount Mottarone, “the mountain between two
lakes”.
It has been the second alpine Botanical Garden, just after
Chanousia’s one, in Val d’Aosta. At the beginning, it was called “Duxia” and it
was economically supported by a friendship association and by the Communes of
Stresa and Gignese. Today it is managed by a consortium of local
authorities.
Thanks to a particular microclimate, rather cool in summer
and not very damp, as well as mild in winter, alpine species can survive in
spite of the low height in 12 hectares: Artemisia, Geranium, Campanula… there
are mostly alpine or pre-alpine species, together with some exotic ones. There
are at all over 800 species in Alpinia’s Botanical Garden.
However, the
most charming feature of this Botanical Garden has always been its position: a
terrace offering an unequalled view over Lake Maggiore and Borromeo’s Gulf and
its islands, sweeping from Alpine peaks to the Po Valley in sunny
days.
