Museo dell`Ombrello e del Parasole

Umbrella and Parasol museum of Gignese

This museum is really unique in the world: it is situated between Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore and it is consecrated to the umbrella and parasol, as well as to umbrella makers` lives who boosted this ancient activity with a pioneering spirit.
The museum was established back in 1939 on the initiative of Igino Ambrosini - whose parents were umbrella makers - who devoted himself to the history of this profession and identified more than 170 umbrella makers families from Gignese and its surroundings that moved all over the world.
The exhibition collects many pieces that reconstruct the history of umbrella and parasol fashion during the XIXth century and up to today: on the ground floor you will find about 150 pieces out of a collection of nearly 1500 (included the accessories, many handles, cloths and ribs).
Moreover, you will find some historic pieces such as Giuseppe Mazzini’s umbrella, the tenor Francesco Tamagno’s and even Queen Margherita’s one. Upstairs the rooms are consecrated to the umbrella maker profession with many papers certifying the presence of the first ones in Gignese as well as the tools, materials ant techniques employed in this peculiar and old trade.
