Stone-cutter Museum (Boleto di Madonna del Sasso)

The “pica sass” (local dialect for stone-cutter) has been one of the most important and widespread professions in Southern Cusio during the XIXth century. Boleto is situated just on the top of a granitic rock that has been exploited for many decades.
The local white granite (Migliarolo di Alzo) has been the best in Europe, as well as the valuable Oira serpentine which arrived even in Milan and Pavia, in the big “Fabbrica” del Duomo and the Certosa-Church.
Moreover, Cusio was also known for its production, which can be admired in many towns even today.

The stone-cutter was really a hard job, as well as a dangerous profession! Nevertheless, many inhabitants of these countries used to carry it out since the first decades of the XIXth century and until the second half of the following century. A special railway connected the extractive area with the industries: marble, granite and serpentine are the jewels of this area, and contributed to celebrate the whole area all over the world.

The museum collects handmade articles, instruments and papers, and its aim is telling Cusio stone-cutters’ history through videos and pictures too.
