Gignese

Ideally, Gignese separates Cusio from Lake Maggiore. Indeed, it is situated just half way on the old commerce route that connected Stresa to Orta.

The side facing Mount Mottarone, sloping down to Lake Maggiore, makes Gignese mostly a suburb of the Verbano than of Cusio, even though its traditions link this little centre to Cusio, as well as its membership to the Consortium of communities in mountain area of Cusio Mottarone.

Enclosed between two streams, Grisana and Erno, Gignese keeps many testimonies that increase the value of its history and its traditions: the Parish Church of San Maurizio, the little church of Madonna del Sasso, the umbrella maker monument.

A mounument that reminds us all a craftsmanlike tradition that has taken root there for a long time, so much that in 1939 Igino Ambrosini, the founder of the near Giardino Alpina (in Stresas’ municipality), founded the core of one of the most peculiar museums in the world, the umbrella and sunshades’ one, the pride of Gignese and an integral part of the Ecomuseo Cusius, a network promoted by Piedmont Region linking all Cusio`s museums.

The history of Gignese begins many centuries before, so much that first documentary evidence dates back to 1000 A.D.; it has been firstly linked to Vergante feud and then to Visconti and Borromeo’s adventures, such as the neighbouring territories facing the Gulf called after them.

Gignese’s economy is based on lake tourism and on hiking on Mount Mottarone (1491 meters above sea level), one of the panoramic points of the area.

Gignese, between Cusio and Lake Maggiore, with its charming views over Verbano, its craftsmanlike traditions, its history and its large number of legends: a little jewel on the slopes of Mount Mottarone, on Cusio’s borders.
